Urban Decay Cosmetics!

If you haven't tried Urban Decay Cosmetics you should!  It's beauty with an edge!  Years ago my mom gave me one of their eye shadow boxes and I fell in love- even  the black and silver glitter ones (I'm too old to wear the glitter colors now).

This brand makes such great staying products.  When I would go swimming I would apply a thick layer of eyeshadow primer potion in color Sin and then cover with a gold shadow.  Then I would coat my lashes in Tarte brand 4 day stain mascara.  After swimming laps and splashing with the kids, my make up was still on and I'm not exaggerating.  I would get dressed and go out for the day without adding any more makeup.

The 24/7 line of eyeliners is um. . . amazing!  I want the whole collection! These liners glide on effortlessly, are smugeable and then they stay put.  If you want to get someone who loves makeup a great Christmas present, this would be it, hint hint!

I also like Ulta or Sephora gift cards. Another great Christmas present is the Naked eye shadow palette that comes with a small eye primer(best one!) and a 24/7 half black, half brown eyeliner. This product is in such high demand that Sephora online is out.

All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray is another cool product.  I especially liked it for keeping on my blush and foundation.  My eye makeup stays on without it.

De slick in a tube can be worn over makeup.  If you feel your skin is looking oily, just slap some on and degrease.   They also make de slick mattifying powder, if you prefer.

You can't loose with this brand!  Next time you are in Ulta or Sephora swipe a color or two on, maybe you too will fall in love!

Sephora has 20% off right now- Nov 3 online orders.  Just use promo code FF2010

Puffy Eyes Go Away!

What is happening to me?  I turn 30 and I suddenly am old!  I don't think so!  I refuse to accept it!  I have been on a quest to banish puffy eyes once and for all! Since I can't rid my life of allergies, crying and salty foods, I must find other remedies.

1.For starters, get enough sleep. Oh wait, my baby wouldn't fall asleep last night and my 3 year old kept waking up with scary dreams.  So that won't work.
2. Sleep on your back with an extra pillow to prevent fluid from settling under your eyes.  Shoot, that doesn't work for me either.  I'm too finicky when it comes to my sleep, I'm a side sleeper with my favorite $50 pillow.  It's not too full, not to flat.  No way will I try an extra pillow.
3. Grab a cold cucumber from the fridge and place slices of it over your eyes.  The coolness constricts blood vessels.  Ya, I could do that, maybe sometimes.
4. Use an eye cream with caffine or vitamin k.  Why?  Because it strengthens blood vessels.  Dr Brandt brand flaws no more r3p eye triple peptide cream is a great caffeinated one, however it's pricey.
5. You can also use a serum that comes in a roller-ball tube.  They are cooling and soothing and the massage motion helps reduce puffiness. Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew Anti-Puff Eye Roller. For $25, I prefer Clinique All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage.
6. Do Jumping jacks for about 5 mins followed by deep breaths.  It helps vamp up your circulation and keeps liquids from pooling under the eyes.  Plus a little exercise never hurts anyone, well maybe your calves will hurt or my case my feet (stupid plantar fasciitis).
7. Curl your upper lashes and apply mascara, that helps disguise the puffiness.  Also you could line your lower lash line with  a little tawny colored eye shadow.

Smashbox fun lip gloss

Get a shiny pink pout all your own! This intuitive silky gloss reacts with your personal skin chemistry to transform from clear into your own custom shade of pink.

I tried this lip gloss on at Ulta a while back and my husband said "that is really pretty, you should buy that."  How nice of him, I still didn't buy it.  I felt $22 was too much to spend.  However, Sephora has it on sale for $10 a tube (limit 2).  So I picked one up and I love it.  It is very shiny and it transforms into a berry pink on me, it's subtle and not too pink (and I love pink).  It is very moisturizing, not at all sticky and the pink stays on the lips for a long time.  I just love it and wish I had grabbed two tubes.  I think it would make a great little gift too.

I love the Smashbox Intuitive O-Glow cheek color as well!  It gives you a nice pink flush.  I want it (add that to my mile long list of wants)!  It would be perfect to keep in your purse for touch-ups since you just use your fingers.  It gives you a really natural pink flush.  I try it on almost every trip to Ulta or Sephora and it's gorgeous!

Best powder ever!!! Make Up For Ever

I ran out of this powder today and took a trip to SEPHORA!!!  My 3 year old loved it and came home with her nails done and blush and lipstick on.  She insisted on wearing her butterfly wings to the store and her tutu.  Needless to day, I love having a girly girl!

This powder is the best powder on earth!  I wouldn't want to live without it.  It helps set the makeup and keeps concealer in place.  The best part about it is that it makes your face look so smooth.  It fills in pores and doesn't settle into fine lines ( yes I have them, wish I could get back my 19 year old skin).   It gets rid of the oily shine so it's nice and matte. It is white, but doesn't leave a white film.  I usually don't put it on my cheeks because I like them to look more dewy.  I apply it with the kabuki brush and it is so soft, it's like silk.

Next time you need powder- get this- you won't be sorry!

For all you cheapies out there you can try ELF's microfinish powder, it is $6 and I have not tried it because I stand by Make Up For Ever's.

The arts!

10 years ago I was living a dream!  I was so full of passion for life.  I wrote in my journal each day about the exquisite happiness I felt while living in Paris and being surrounded by the art world that impassioned me.  I was so young and free from responsibility.  Seeing Leonardo Da Vinci's Virgin on the Rocks in person made me teary eyed.  Each week I would sit and stare at the Nike of Samothrace in all her grandeur.   On a weekend trip to London we went to Broadway and saw The Lion King and The Phantom of the Opera.  I lived for those moments.  They seemed to awaken something deep inside me.  Those things made me happy and full of life.

The years went by, now my sister who is 10 years younger than me  is experiencing the life I once lived.   I hear her excitement as she talks about the art she has seen, the places she's been.  I wondered how I ever felt that way.  I have even heard myself say that my kids have sucked that sort of life out of me.  Nothing has seemed to stir up passion inside me until last night . . . The Lion King!  I felt young and alive again as the theatrical arts and the live music enveloped me.  I found myself being sucked into the songs where the singer sang with such power, I was captivated once again.  What thrills me is that I don't feel like a sleep walking mommy anymore.  I felt that sparkle enough to know it's not completely gone.  I just need to make our next adventure happen.  Maybe me and my girls can leave the house today and do something fun!  Our goodnight story will be about art tonight.  Now I must go put on my makeup.  I'm feeling like gold and purple inspired by the makeup from The Lion King.

Thoughts. . .

I've been so lazy lately!  But don't worry, even on lazy days I do my makeup!  Today as I was doing winged liquid eye liner my 1 year old kept grabbing my legs to get my attention.  That's not the thing you want when you are trying to be precise.  But I distracted her with some dried blueberries.  Food is always an easy distraction.  I liked winged eyeliner.  it's so pretty!  I like pretty things.

My 3 year old yesterday asked me if she can have her own makeup when she grows up- of course she can!  She has been bringing me nail polish and remover each morning to repaint her nails.  She's very specific too : put pink on these ones and blue on these ones and a little heart on my toes.  Even with all her drama, I'm so glad she's a girly girl!

My hubby's work is trying to make it possible for us to move to Japan for 5 months.  I hope it works out- we'll see, I never count on his work to come through for us.  Nevertheless, I was thinking about how hard it would be to pack my makeup.  5 months without each item would be retched- of course it's do-able, but still.  I started thinking about the Tokyo girls fun bright makeup.  How inspiring that could be!  I could be a little geisha.

Anyway- I'm pathetic these days.  Maybe one day I'll get my act together and make a how to makeup video.  I have an HD video camera now- I don't know how to use it, but I have one.

Lush Cosmetics!

Have I said enough about how wonderful my mother is?  Because she is!  She ran the Boston marathon back in April (yes she's an amazing runner too! Jealous!) and she went to a Lush store there.  I had heard good things about them and I really like natural products so she bought me some fun products to appease my skin care fetish.
My favorite of the products is Ocean Salt Cleanser.  I am an exfoliater maniac. But that's a different post.  This one leaves my skin feeling so soft and smooth.  It's great for all over the body including the face, although it is a bit abrasive.  Angels on Bare skin cleanser is lovely.  It is very gentle and exfoliates ever so slightly.  My skin feels so soft after I use it.  It has bits of lavender throughout, so it's a nice relaxing product.  It is really thick and has to be mixed with a little water while you are rubbing it on.  I like it a lot.

The other two products she bought me I liked, but they have a few negative aspects to them.  The first is a face mask called love lettuce.  It is a green mask made out of food.  I liked how it exfoliated when I washed it off, it also tightened my skin.  What I didn't like was that it had to be kept refrigerated so I sometimes I was too lazy to walk into the kitchen to put it on.  Also it expired quite quickly.  A few weeks shelf life.  Because of the expiration I felt the need to use it everyday.
She also got me a moisturizer called Imperialis.  It is very moisturizing and is supposed to be great for skin that is oily in spots and dry in others.  It is very heavy so I feel like it can only be used before bed.  I don't like the strong medicinal smell, but it does seems to go away, or I got used it it.   It does make my skin feel like butter.

These products are great for those who are earth conscientious, or vegan.  They are all natural which is always nice- but the packaging just isn't as cute as Sephora's products, and lets face it, we all know I'm a sucker for pretty packaging.

My fabulous spa facial!

My fabulous mother gave me a facial gift certificate to The Sanctuary Spa where I enjoyed an hour long pampering!  I began by soaking  my feet in warm water while I inhaled the spicy fragrance of cinnamon and cloves place in a heated wrap around my neck.   My feet were scrubbed with sugar- yes I did say I came for a facial.   I was then taken to a private room where I enjoyed the subtle sounds of relaxation.  I did some deep yoga breathing while warm steam enveloped my face.  I enjoyed treatment after treatment slathered on my face.  She even massaged my hands and feet with 24 carat gold flecked lotion.  My hands and feet glistened in the sunlight all day.  I enjoyed the warm towels she placed over my face as she pressed on pressure points and washed the treatments off.  When all was said and done I was in a state of utter relaxation.  My face was fresh and clean and I vowed I would come back once a month for star treatment- too bad I can't afford this luxury.
If anyone is ever wanting to give me the best gift ever, I highly recommend a gift certificate to The Sanctuary.

Clarins multi-active early wrinkle correction cream

I received a sample of this luxurious moisturizer from Sephora.  I really love it! The only thing that would make it better is SPF.  The sent is so light and fresh.  The cream goes on smooth and plumps fine lines.  It leaves skin soft and never flaky and not at all oily.  Great stuff!  I'd love to try the night cream.

Cheap makeup lovers!

If you're like me, pretty makeup packaging temps you more than the makeup itself.  I have a gorgeous Mac eye palette that I will never throw away. Most of my makeup is high end, but I have ventured out and tried a few cheap ones.

My favorite foundation isn't cheap, but I have found that Revlon Colorstay is a cheaper alternative that I like almost as much.  If the color matches you this is my top drugstore foundation pick.

e.l.f cosmetics is the cheapest makeup you can find and some of the products are surprisingly good. The makeup brushes are pretty good starting at $1.  My favorite product of theirs is the waterproof eyeliner pen $1.  I like each color!  It is like a felt tip marker and it stays on my eyes all day without flaking.  Pretty remarkable for $1.  They also have a good $3 eye primer, it is mineral eyeshadow primer.  I have used it and recommend it if you don't want to spend $18 on a better one.  Their $1 tweezers are remarkable.  They work almost as well as my tweezerman.  They are great for eyebrows, but also for your first aid kit.   For $6 you can get their studio high definition powder which is almost as good as my $30 favorite can't live without Make up For ever HD powder from Sephora.   I also like their studio makeup remover wipes $3.  I have tried their eyeshadows and don't like them much.  They are really small and go on light.

Place an order by 6-28 and you get 50% mineral makeup and $1.98 Shipping.  Usually their shipping is $7eyeslipsface.com

The other cheap makeup I think is totally fine to buy is cheap mascara, especially clear mascara for your brows.  e.l.f has one that is gloopy, but works.  I like Maybelline Great lash- clear.

Maybe someday I will convert to drugstore makeup- who am I kidding, I will always be a Sephora addict!  I waited in line an hour just to get in the store the day it opened and another 45 mins to buy something, I even saw myself on the news waiting in that long line.  I loved every minute of it. And I will forever be won over by pretty packaging.

Korres Abyssinia Oil Volumizing Mascara Review

I have been using this mascara for months now.  I bought a few tubes of it back when my eyes all of a sudden were sensitive to everything.  I also bought this brand of eye shadows.  My eyes would water and would get a rash- It was almost the end of my life!  I thought I wouldn't be able to wear makeup any more and  might as well die.  Then I tried Korres and Tarte products because they are made with all natural ingredients.  Slowly my problem got better and now I can wear whatever.  Lucky me.  It could have also been the new Meds I started the same time it occurred.

This mascara it great!  It moisturizes your lashes and coats them easily and beautifully.  The brush is tiny, so it's easy to maneuver.   It stays put and doesn't fake.

Verdict:  Great volumizing mascara made with natural ingredients that do not irritate sensitive eyes

Tarte 4 day stay lash stain review

I had surgery this week and haven't been wearing makeup.  I decided to put on just a little mascara and this is the one I tried.  Wow, it does NOT come off!  The formula is very wet and easily coated my top and bottom lashes of both eyes without having to dip the wand again.  It did not leave flakes around my eyes- good.  I washed my face before bed and it didn't budge.  Shower in the morning- still on. Wow, by the end of the second day it is still on.  A few of my lashes aren't fully coated, but it's definitely on.  It's bugging me, I need to see if I can get it off.  I use my Purity face wash and it doesn't budge.  I heavily scrub it with two different eye makeup removers and manage to get some of it off, but not all.  Now I wish I would have just left it on and let it wear off by itself.  I just always wash my makeup off, so I couldn't stand to leave it there.  But I think this stuff is cool.  I would totally wear this before camping or swimming or somewhere I wouldn't normally wear makeup.  Pretty awesome stuff. Also it's made of all natural ingredients so it should not bother most eyes.  I had a month I could only wear natural organic makeup or my eyes would water and get rashes.  This is a great brand for that as well as Korres

Verdict:  Has amazing staying power.  Truly lasts for days without flaking or smudging.  All natural ingredients- plus!  Great pick for the no fuss girl who will put it on once and leave it for days.

Cargo LashActivator

I bought this one a while ago when Sephora had it on sale for $5.  I really don't like it at all.  I would have been mad if I paid $20 original price.  It's the plastic brush that I don't like.  The bristles are spaced too far apart and the brush is really long.  I just don't like the look it gives my particular lashes and they look worse if I keep coating them.  If I'm going to wear this mascara, like I did today.  I like it best with one or two small swipes.  It does last all day and doesn't flake, so that is good.

Verdict:  Not on my top 10 list.  The plastic brush doesn't grab each lash and gives lashes a really stiff sharp look.

Rimmel Eye Magnifier mascara review

This mascara is for sure better than the Max Volume Flash Mascara.  I liked the way my lashes looked.  They were longer and thicker.  This has a wet formula and a plastic brush which really helped separate the lashes and made applying it simple.  It's lasts as well as my high end mascaras.  I do feel like my lashes feel more brittle and less supple with these cheaper mascaras. When compared side by side to Urban Decay's skyscraper and Cargo lashactivator, all with plastic brushes, I liked Decay's the best, it went on the smoothest with the cleanest look.  With that said, it was a minimal difference.  For cheap version I would buy this one.

Verdict: Cheap mascara worthy of wearing!  It adds volume and length and looks beautiful.  Lasts all day with minimal flaking.

My suggestion would be to buy this mascara and also a product that works as well as RapidLash worked for me.  RapidLash will give you long lashes and this is cheap enough for you to save for RapidLash.

Rimmel Max volume flash Mascara Review

I chose this because I needed to review a drugstore mascara and this brand was on sale.
Is it worth it to spend money on mascara, or buy cheaper drugstore versions?  The more mascaras I try the more I wonder.

This mascara seems good enough.  It gets the job done and it lasts all day, with only minimal flaking.  Not enough to leave smudges.  The formula is quite wet and it has a traditional brush.  Which makes it easy to apply and takes less coats.  I think I prefer drier formulas so I can coat them more naturally. What I didn't love was it made my lashes clump together at the tips.  I like a more separated lash look- just my preference.

Verdict:  For $7 a tube this is absolutely worth the price.   I have liked Hourglass and Laura Mercier mascaras the best so far, but they are 3 times the cost.

Fresh Supernova mascara review

This went on beautifully, My lashes looked long and lush.  I only wore mascara  and after a few hours I had black smudges under my eyes.  I know it wasn't my eyeliner or eyeshadow because I wasn't wearing any.  I wiped it off and still had raccoon eyes later.  I did put it on my lower lashes because I have been doing that with all the mascara's I have been reviewing. By the end of the day my lower lashes did not have much mascara on them.

Verdict:  Gives lashes a long thick look, but by the end of the day it smudges underneath the eyes.

Laura Mercier building mascara Review

I like this one a lot!  It looks better than Smashbox DNA for sure.  It builds and thickens.  It is a deep shiny black.  The brush is easy to use, not to big and awkward. When compared to BADgal it is shinier and thicker.  It goes on with fewer swipes.  It depends on the look you like, BADgal is more separated and Matte.  Both lengthen equally.  It is so similar to Hourglass.  The formula is about the same, the brush is a little bigger, but the look is the same.  I put one on each eye and could not tell a difference.  I also put it on without curling my lashes and it brought them up.  It builds easily and doesn't get spidery.  Great staying power without flaking.

Verdict:  Great mascara!  A top pick for sure!  It easily builds lashes so they are longer and thicker.

Smashbox DNA mascara

This is interesting mascara . . . I didn't think I liked the brush as I was using it because it is so awkward.  The tip is really square and big, it doesn't taper like every other brand I have used.  I did fine applying it, but I can see how people with less skill could get it all over.  The formula is wetter than the Hourglass, Urban decay, and Benefit brands I tried so far.  I was able to use one dip to coat both lashes.  I dipped it once and then moved the brush several times over my lashes.   I thought it gave my lashes a more winged look. So maybe the brushes strange shape helped.  What I didn't like about the look it gave was it clumped the base of the lashes together.  I like more separation. I had a few flecks under my eyes before bed, but barely.

Verdict:  Good mascara for thickening and giving your lashes a winged look.  The brush is awkward and bulky.   Not my favorite because of how it clumps the lashes together.

Benefit BADgal Lash Mascara Review

BADgal lash mascara has a huge brush.  I liked the size of the brush, but I can see how it could be too big for some people.  You have to be careful not to get it on your eyelid.  The formula is a bit dry which makes it go on naturally and matte.    It takes several swipes to make your lashes thicker, but it doesn't clump and get spidery.  It separates the lashes beautifully and thickens a bit.  It stayed on all day, but it did leave a few flakes under my eyes at the end of the day, but very minimal. I've used this one in the past and I didn't like how quickly the product was used up.  I wanted to see the comparison side by side, so before my shower this morning I put it on again on one eye and the other eye I used Hourglass superficial lash and it took triple the amount of swipes to distribute the product and it didn't thicken as well or look as shiny dark as Hourglass, the length looked about the same. But BADgal lash looked more natural, which I really like that look. I still think the biggest con is how quickly the product runs out and how large the brush is.

Verdict:  Once again another great mascara.  It is long lasting and build-able.  The brush is very large and can be difficult to use if you have smaller eyes.  The tube also gets used up quickly. Great if you want a matte natural look.

Urban Decay Skycraper Mulit-Benefit Mascara review

Urban Decay's Skyscraper Multi-Benefit Mascara was good.  The wand is made of plastic which separates lashes nicely. It is a very natural looking mascara and goes on quite thin, but is build-able.  I felt like it didn't thicken my lashes as much as other brands, but it did lengthen.  It stayed put most of the day with only a few flakes under my eyes, very minimal and that was after planting my garden. I read that if you wear this for 2 weeks straight it will darken light lashes, like a dye. Interesting. This has a very natural look to it.

Verdict:  I can see why this mascara is on Sephora's top sellers list.  It is a good mascara with minimal flaking.  It helped lengthen the lashes, not thicken.  It is very natural looking.

Hourglass Superficial Lash Carbon Review

Will this mascara reign as the winner?  We will see!  So far this is the best mascara I have ever used!  The brush grabs every lash. It separated lashes beautifully so they don't all clump together.  The formula seems dry, but it makes it very build-able without looking spidery.  You can put on as little or as much as you would like.  A little looks very natural.  A lot seriously makes your lashes look fake.  My husband refused to believe I wasn't wearing false lashes.  Each time he looked at me he said "that mascara stuff is amazing."  It didn't flake off or get under my eyes at all and I used it on my lower lashes. It stayed put.

Verdict:  False lash appeal!  This mascara leaves lashes looking long and thick, not spidery.  It does not flake off.  I will certainly buy this one!  I love it!

Stila Lash Visor Mascara Review

Yesterday I woke up and prepared for my colonoscopy. Before I left the house I coated my lashes in Stila Lash Visor waterproof Mascara. I really liked the way the mascara went on. It separated my lashes and coated them well with only a few swipes. It is a very thick runny product. It left them looking long and thick. I really liked it.  The real test was when I looked in the mirror long after the colonoscopy and recovery. What I saw were flecks of mascara under my eyes. I wiped them away and took a long nap. Again, flecks were under my eyes. I wiped them away and went on with life. Before bed there were still flecks under my eyes, but I noticed how well my lashes stayed curled, usually at the end of the day they are straight again and hanging in my eyes.  I scrubbed it off- which was a tough task and went to sleep.

My verdict:   This waterproof  mascara goes on beautifully and holds the lashes curl, however is does flake off and leaves specks around your eyes. It thickens and lengthens.  I don't like the flaking, but will wear it swimming. This is not a top pick of mine.

Van Gough in the Sun!

Eyes closed, sunbeams engulf my pale skin. I breathe in the fresh morning air. I reminisce on my trip to Arles, France where Van Gough once lived! Oh to be 19 again. 10 years ago, I was there, I walked the streets Van Gough walked. The sun, the glorious sun! I feel Van Gough's yellow paint as I feel the sun kiss my flesh. Vincent Van Gogh Sunflowers Art Print POSTER gough - 13 x 19 Thank goodness I remembered my sunscreen. Not just any sunscreen, my new Shady Day sunscreen wipes. The botanical infused spf 30 wipes feel and smell as fresh as the morning sun. One easy swipe and I am protected from the Sun's magnificent rays. Why can't every brand of sunscreen make a wipe form! These are spectacular, stupendous! So easy! Even my kids request them.

Everyone is Beautiful!

Last nights Biggest Loser episode got me thinking about beauty. I thought I would post a rant by none other than me. . .

I believe God has given me a gift. I can see beauty in everyone! I am sad when people don't see the beauty in themselves. I know that we are all special because we are children of God. He is aware of each of us and he loves us. Also he has given us all special gifts unique to us. The hardest part for so many people is believing in themselves and seeing their own potential.

Last night when the Biggest Loser contestants had their makeovers and looked in the mirrors at themselves and finally saw how far they had come, they had their own breakthroughs. I loved how they looked, but more than that I loved that they could finally see their inner beauty. They finally had confidence in themselves and knew they could achieve anything.

Anyone can put on makeup and do their hair and look gorgeous; but it's when they look in the mirror and believe that they are great just the way they are, then their true inner beauty shines. Each and everyone truly is a work of art, a fine masterpiece!

Basic eye makeup how to

1. Prime your lids with eye primer.  See my previous post on my favorite primers
2. Apply a light shade over your lid.  I like to get a lot of powder on my brush and then tap it over the lid 3-4 times to get a good concentration of color.  My favorite color to use for this is light pink or beige.
3.  Apply a darker shade to crease of your lid only going in as far as your eyebrow is.  I like to use a brown, gray  or plum color.
4. Line the upper eyelid with eyeliner.  I start about the middle of the lid and go to the outer corner getting the thickest at the outer most corner.  Then I line the rest of the lid by making small strokes from the center to the inner corner.  I like it almost invisible at the inner corner.
5. Curl the lashes
6. Apply mascara.  I always use black.  I like to use 2 mascaras.  I first use a thickening one by wiggleing the brush back and forth. Then I apply a lengthening one on top with 1-2 strokes.

When I ever get an HD video camera I will demonstrate.

RapidLash
Does RapidLash really give you long gorgeous lashes?
Yes.
I have tried the product for a few months now and not only do I notice a difference, but so does my husband.  He keeps asking me if I'm wearing fake lashes (Which I do wear sometimes).   I was skeptical, but it really is a product that works.  I was expecting them to look even thicker than they do, I guess I still have use for my false lashes.  I even have a pair of false lashes that are shorter than my real lashes- thanks to RapidLash.
Bottom line, if you are thinking about getting lash extensions, spend the money on RapidLash instead.  I love my new real lashes!

Fake it gorgeous!

Ardell Fashion Lashes
J'adore false lashes!  I always feel prettier when I'm wearing my Ardell lashes.  They add volume and length and make my lashes look Va Va Vavoom! Don't be afraid.  They are under $5 a pair and they last a few weeks if you take care of them and are gentle.  So grab a pair and experiment. I have used the single lashes and find them too complicated, I like the strips.  They have dozens of styles to choose from. My favorites are 135 and babies. Find your favorites.

Tips for applying:
1. Apply eye liner. This is easier and looks better if you do it before the lashes.  I put lashes on last, after all my makeup is complete.
2. Curl your natural lashes with an eyelash curler and apply mascara.  My favorite eyelash curler is
Shu uemura.  This creates a shelf for the lashes, and applying mascara now makes it so you don't have to apply it to the false lashes- so you can reuse them.
3. Trim the lashes.  Place them on your eyes and see if they are too wide.  They're always too wide for me.  Trim them with scissors on the outer edge (the inner edge is shorter).
OR it's easiest to apply them if you cut the lashes into 3 segments and add them 1 at a time.   Does that make sense?
4. Apply a thin line of Eyelash adhesive (I also use Ardell brand adhesive).  I apply the glue to a paper and then run a toothpick it, then I run that over the lashes.  That helps it go on thinly.
5. Wait for the adhesive to become tacky, 30seconds or so.
6. Place the lashes on the eyelid as close as possible to the lashline.  I hold the lashes with tweezers. Press to secure to skin.  I like to tap it with the edge of my tweezers.

It sounds harder than it actually is.  It just takes practice.  I do think they feel a bit obnoxious for about an hour, after that I forget they are on.  Whether you wear false lashes or not, you are beautiful.  Everyone is beautiful in their own skin.  You just have to believe it.

What colors should I wear?

My sister-in-law asked me what colors look best on her.  That's a great question!  I think it's fun to wear every color of the rainbow, but I know that natural always looks best. When we wear colors in our skin tone we look better.
With the correct colors (in cosmetics and clothing):
  • Your skin tone will appear radiant and glowing
  • Your eyes will appear brighter and clearer
  • Your hair will reflect highlights
  • You will hear compliments - such as "You look great"!
With the wrong colors (in cosmetics and clothing) :
  • Your skin tone will appear tired and drained
  • Your eyes may appear shadowed, dark circles
  • Even your teeth can appear with a slight yellow hue
  • You will hear comments - such as "You look tired” "Do you feel OK?"
How to tell your skin tone:   look at the underside of your arm. If your veins appear bluish you are cool toned, if they appear greenish you are warm toned. If your foundation is pink based you have cool undertones.  If it is yellow based you have warm undertones.
Neutrals look good on both tones.

Here are two color charts that should help you see what are considered cool or warm colors.

Cool colors                                                                      Warm colors

The power of eye primer!

Before I begin a painting I like to paint my base color. Just as if you wanted to paint your walls, you start with a primer. I am a primer junkie! I never put on my eye makeup without first applying eye primer, unless it's an accident. Primer most definitely makes your eye makeup stay on better. It also helps the prevent the shadow from creasing and helps intensify the color. You can get much better results out of your cheap eye shadows if you first apply primer. I have two favorite brands that I can't decide which I like better. Urban Decay eyeshadow primer potion. They have 3 different varieties, original, Eden, and Sin. Original is basically clear, Eden is a lovely Matte beige, and Sin is a shimmery champagne color. Two Faced Shadow Insurance is also amazing and I like the tube better than the wand of Urban Decay. Either Choice will blow you away! I promise you better longer lasting eye shadow if you use one of these primers. It's worth the money! Buy cheap eye shadows to make up for it.

A cheap decent alternative is ELF mineral eye primer $3.  You're shadow will stay on better with a primer. Think about it, you put it on in the morning and it's still there at night to take off. How nice is that. The shadow isn't as bright with the ELF brand, but it is still better than no primer or other junky alternatives.

Bottom line- splurge a little and buy yourself an eye primer-you won't be sorry!

Prime Time!

7My gorgeous sisters-in-law were over today and were saying they wanted primer. I freaked out I was so excited to talk about it! You all know I'm obsessed with makeup and love talking about it any chance I get. So today's news is PRIMER!!! My favorite primer is Smashbox photo finish. The first time I tried this was with my sister and sister-in-law when I lived in San Francisco. They were visiting me alone with no parents! They were only 12 years old and so super cute! I love them! We went to Sephora and they had these little plastic containers sitting out, so we grabbed one and filled it with this magic potion and took it home as a lovely sample. Who knew then it would be my best friend.

I have tried several different brands of primer and this is my top pick! They have several to choose from. This and the Light are my favorites. The Light is better if you have oily skin. They also have one with SPF 15 that dries clear. They also have one that is a bronzer (haven't tried it, but how cool is that!) However, If you are acne prone I also like Cover FX Clearprep FX Matte Foundation Primer and Anti-acne treatment. It's very light weight and goes on nicely.

Why should you prime? Because it fills in all your pores and fine lines and makes your skin look better. It also helps mattify your skin so it's not so shiny oily looking. And . . . it helps your foundation stay put better. Shush . . . Don't tell my husband I wrote this, but he even put it on before family pictures. It's great to wear alone if you don't wear foundation and it's full of vitamins so it's good for your skin. Sephora says

"The silky blend of vitamins and antioxidants smoothes and perfects skin, while the unique formula helps to inhibit the destruction of collagen, and fills in fine lines and pores for a flawless finish."

Count me in!

For all you cheapies, you can use Monistat Anti Chafing Gel on your face and it does the same thing (without all the vitamins of course) Sounds strange, but it really works. Also I have used L'oreal Studio Secrets Professional Secret No.1 Magic Perfecting Base and it is really good too.

Next time I will talk about Eye primer! My sisters-in-law like that the best! They put their eye shadow on this morning and it was almost non-existent. I did likewise and had to scrub it off tonight.

No Sting!

Today I tried my new Shiseido Sun Protection Eye Cream spf 32. Why would I use it when I knew my eyes wouldn't see the sun? Because it's new! I love new things. I am so impressed! I wanted this because every sunblock I put on my eye lids causes my eyes to water constantly, not to mention the stinging and bloodshot eyes. It's amazing. No stinging, burning, watering, just bliss. It feels like a luxurious lotion. I'm a new convert after one try! I'll be putting this on my husband and children this summer. Hurray for sunshine! I hope it finds us soon.

Heaven at my door!

The most beautiful bell just rang- my door. I spied the UPS man and had high hopes of the package being my Sephora order. Da da da daaaaa! "My Makeup" I squealed in delight! I proceded to tear the package apart and admired it's contents. The proverb "Good things come in small packages" rings true. I got 13 sample products too! I'm ecstatic to try my new color palette. Such fun colors! I love ordering their products. Looking at the site is so fun. I get a high when I place the order, then I get to anticipate the glorious day when the doorbell rings and I get to hold the magnificent package in my hands. Now the fun part begins!

The eyebrows have it!

What is beauty? The idea has changed throughout time. L'oreal is creating a 5 volume book set called "100,000 Years of Beauty." It explores beauty through the ages, from prehistoric people to the modern age, and even a look into the future. I find this idea fascinating from an art history major perspective. This painting by Petrus Christus painted in 1470 exemplifies the beauty of that time. This woman's forehead, eyebrows and eyelashes have been plucked to raise her hairline and bare her neck, her face is totally hairless. Some pink on her cheeks and lips add  warmth to her pale face. As we look to art throughout time up to present day we discover that beauty has always been something women want to obtain, however the different ways beauty is manifested is always changing. We no longer pluck every hair from our face, instead we try to only pluck what is necessary to have beautifully sculpted brows.

I always end my makeup routine by doing my eyebrows. I don't like overly plucked brows. I love them bold and beautiful. Here's How:

1. The biggest mistake people make is to tweeze too much. Avoid overplucking as it can take months for brows to grow back. Here's a simple trick to remember: The space between your brows should be equal to, or a little wider than, your eyes. To find where your brow should go, take a long eyeshadow brush or pencil and hold it parallel to the side of your nose. Where the brush meets your brow is where your brow should begin.
2. To find the end of your brow, extend the brush diagonally from your nostril, following the outside edge of your eye toward the brow. Where the inside edge of the brush hits is where your brow should end.
3. The best brows have a slight arch. To find yours, hold the brush parallel to the outside edge of the colored part of your eye (the iris). Where the brush meets the brow is where the highest part of your brow should be.
4. You'll want to invest in a good pair of tweezers with a slanted edge. I like Anastasia's and Tweezerman, but they can be pricey. La Cross is a decent drugstore choice for about $6
5. Make sure to pluck hairs in the direction they grow. Don't grab too many hairs at a time. You can hold skin taut as you pluck.
6. It's a myth that brows should never be tweezed from above. You want both the bottoms and tops to be smooth. So be careful, but tweeze the top AND the bottom.
7. Stop every few hairs to step back and look at the job you're doing. If you overpluck, you're stuck. Unlike most hairs on your body, your brows won't always grow back once they're yanked.
Tips:

1. If your brows are sparse or spotty, like mine, you can fill them in by pressing a brown shadow into your brow. I like Anastasia powder. Her eyebrow kit is my favorite that contains everything you need, including tweezers. I've heard Chanel's Perfect Brow Compact is the ultimate brow shadow. I have seen Sonia Kashuk's eyebrow kit at Target which has 4 colors you should be able to mix for the right shade for around $10.
2. If you use a pencil to fill in sparse brows, apply with short, feathered strokes from the inside of the brow out. Then carefully rub brows with a brush or your fingertips to soften the effect.
3. Brow gel helps keep your brows in place all day. Or if you don't have gel, apply a dab of hairspray to your finger and use it to keep unruly hairs in place. Maybelline has a cheap brow gel, but it's not stiff enough. Anastasia's is the best but around $20. Essence has one that is stiff, but comes out of the tube very gloopy for $3. If anyone finds a cheap one that works as well as Anastasia's let me know, I'll buy it.

Happy St Patrick's Day

What better way to bring out your art abilities that nail polish. Every girly girl feels prettier with them painted.
The HOT Nails on the runways this season are short and opaque! Pastels with no sparkle are in Vogue! I'm wearing the lime green color. To be honest I think it looks ghastly on me. I'm too pale. Greens and yellows look better on darker tanned skin, but it's St. Patrick's day. I love the pink and purples! They look great on anyone and are so feminine. Just make sure you buy opaque colors. You don't want shimmer or sparkles this season. So run to the store and buy your favorite brand and shade and make the sidewalk your own personal runway. My favorite nail polish is OPI, but these are Ulta brand.

Visiting my sister

High on ginseng smoothies from Jamba juice, my roommate and I slid down our stairs on our pillows only to meet six new boys. That was ten or so years ago. My sister is now attending the same college. I couldn't resist a weekend trip with my mom to visit her. I did my sisters hair and makeup each day. It was so fun! The mall there had no new and exciting stores. So of course we went into the only half way decent store, Victoria's Secret, to try on bras and paint some color to our lips. My sister is wearing a bright pink. Pink is a really hot color this season. Just check out Sephora! Pink is everywhere! It's my favorite color so I'm super excited. Red lips are also on the runways paired with pastels. The key is go very light on the eye makeup and make it pop with the red lips. My college days are long gone for me, but the memories will last a life time.

Acne 101!

As my wedding day approached I got a zit of all zits right in the middle of my chin. I panicked and did all the wrong things. It was one of those deep zits with no white head. I tried squeezing it as hard as I could. That only hurt and made it more swollen. I scrubbed it with vigor. I covered it with alcohol. The night before the wedding I put toothpaste on it. I heard it dried it up quickly. No! Instead it was bigger and redder. That day my zit and I married my loving husband of almost 9 years.
Tips:
1. Wash your face morning and night!
Especially at night to get off all that makeup and grime from the day. You are a lazy sucker if you go to bed with your makeup on. If your skin is oily a cleanser containing 2% Salicylic acid is good. You can also swipe a pad soaked in Salicylic acid over your face after cleansing, this will help soak up the oil without over drying your skin. I keep Stridex pads on hand. They're like $5 at walmart. There are other brands as well. You can also use Stridex pads to rub down your feet then apply lotion or Eucerine brand Aquaphor. This tip is from Paula Begoun, and it really helps dry cracked feet.
Suggested Cleansers with 2% Salicylic acid are:
Murad Clarifying cleanser, or Murad AHA/BHA exfoliating cleanser
Neutrogena oil-free acne wash
DERMAdoctor aint misbehavin

3. Wash your makeup brushes! Wash them once a week with shampoo and let them air dry. This kills the bacteria that can cause or make acne worse.

4.Don't skip Moisturizer
Even oily skin needs hydration. Just make sure your moisturizer is oil free and noncomedogenic. Once again for my sensitive skin my favorite moisturizer is CeraVe. There are many good ones that also contain SPF. Like Aveeno Positively Radiant, Daily Defense Spf 30
Olay Complete Defense SPF 30

5.Pimple Treatment
I don't get much acne, but when one pops up I always put Neutrogena On-the-Spot Acne Treatment on it before bed. I just dot it on. It contains 2.5% benzoyl peroxide. Look for products that contain at least 2% to be effective. I like this one because it doesn't totally dry out and irritate my skin. If the zit is really swollen a little 1% hydrocortisone cream helps reduce the swelling. You can even get Cortisone shots in your zits by a dermatologist.

6.Avoid abrasive products
Abrasive scrubs can irritate the acne and may even rupture pimples. This can lead to infection and prolong the healing process.

7. Consider switching foundation from liquid to mineral
Mineral foundation doesn't clog pores. I still use and prefer liquid foundation, but I'm not acne prone.

8. For stubborn persistent acne a prescription Retinoid may be needed, or birth control pills- I know, sounds strange, but the biggest cause of acne is hormones. you can use every product on the market and still have zits because of your hormones. Also if you stop taking your birth control pills, you may have major breakouts, even a few months after stopping. There is even evidence that taking 5 pills throughout the day of Cod liver oil will help.

Remember you notice the acne more than other people. Also putting on too much concealer that cakes around a zit can make it stand out more. Just embrace your natural beauty. Beauty comes from the inside out!

Wrinkle cream

Since we are approaching 30 (I refuse to turn 30! I'm 29 and holding), my friend asked about a good wrinkle cream. Aging happens right- no way around it! Even if I say I'm 29 forever. In my previous post I listed my basic skin care regimen, but thought I would be a little more detailed in this one pertaining to preventing wrinkles. Use an antioxidant cream. I mentioned it in my last post. Eucerine COQ10. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least 30 SPF everyday. I like Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 30. Put it on your face and Chest and hands (they age too). Korres brand has a sunblock stick for sensitive areas like the eyes and lips, but it's about $30. I just bought Shiseido Sun Protection Eye Cream 32, I love, love love it. It's the first eye sunscreen I have used that doesn't stingUse a retinoid The stronger ones are better but require a prescription. But many over the counter brands can still help lessen the appearance of lines. A good one is Roc brand Deep wrinkle night cream. I want to get a Chemical Peel from the Dermatologist someday soon. You can get mini at home Chemical Peels like Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel. There is a new product coming out in April I want to try called Aveeno Ageless Vitality. It's a line of products that use zinc and copper to produce charge that is supposed to stimulate the skin cells to make collagen or elastin. I'll let you know how it is when I try it. No one wants a wrinkled canvas!

Skincare

Every woman is beautiful. Thank goodness we have a little help unveiling our beauty. Here is my skin maintenance routine. I have super sensitive skin and have been blessed with acne free skin (with an occasional pop up). I wash my face each morning with DERMAdoctor wrinkle revenge and  at night with Cetephil. I love to exfoliate! Everyday I use a face brush. I like the Clarisonic. . Sally's has a little face brush you use by hand for $2, that works also. Once a week I use Dr Brandt Microdermabrasion to exfoliate. I also think a washcloth exfoliates well. Then I get a washcloth as hot as I can stand to wring out and place it over my face to open my pores and because it feels so refreshing. I always apply a CoQ10 serum to fight fine lines and wrinkles. There are many on the market, Eucerine Redness Relief CoQ10 is my favorite on my sensitive skin, I can even put it on my eyes. I like to allow 10 mins for it to penetrate my skin. Antioxidants are so good for you. You should also try to get it in your diet. Follow with sunblock if it's day. Any sunblock is fine! I use many different ones or a moisturizer with it in. I just discovered my new favorite moisturizer CeraVe. I got a sample from the dermatologist and love it. It retains moisture all day without getting oily. The best part is it is around $12 at Walmart, Walgreens, even Costco pharmacy has it. I also really like Clinique Moisture surge. I also read that Neutrogena Ageless Essentials Continuous Hydration Night Cream is just as good as Clinique's moisture surge. It's very important to have a fresh moisturized clean canvass before you begin your work of art.
